May 2, 2025 – At Asawana Farms, we believe that sustainable growth begins with knowledge—and this week, we had the privilege of learning from one of the best in the field.
Asawana Farms welcomed Dr. Nadine Burton of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Small Farms Program to share her wisdom on overhead irrigation systems. Dr. Burton led a specialized training on overhead irrigation systems that is designed for farms with dense planting zones, thus equipping our team with the skills to better nourish our crops through efficient water delivery. These systems—whether spray-based or bucket-style—are ideal for farms with a high density of crops, making them perfect for our expanding waterleaf and bitter leaf production. Asawana Farms sought this expertise in preparation for scaling up the production of waterleaf and bitter leaf, crops requiring reliable hydration to thrive.
This training came at a pivotal time. As we prepare to scale up our operations and cultivate more nutrient-rich, culturally significant greens, the need for consistent and efficient irrigation has become essential. We reached out to UMES for guidance, and they responded with expertise, care, and an unwavering commitment to agricultural education.
We’re also incredibly grateful to Around The Bay Foundation (ATBF), whose support through the IFARM grant made this training possible. Their partnership with UMES continues to empower small farms like ours to grow smarter, conserve resources, and thrive in the long term.
Asawana Farms extends our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Nadine Burton, UMES, and ATBF for investing in our journey. With this new knowledge and technology, we’re watering not just our crops—but the roots of a stronger, more sustainable future.
