11/2025 At Asawana Farms, every harvest tells a story — a story of soil, sun, and the people who make the work meaningful. This past weekend, that story came to life through the laughter, curiosity, and dedication of four wonderful volunteers who answered our call to come learn how to harvest sweet potatoes.
When we extended our invitation, it wasn’t just about lending hands — it was about opening hearts to the beauty of growing food. We wanted our community to experience what it feels like to connect directly with the land, to touch the soil, and to see where nourishment truly begins.
The morning began under a calm autumn sky. After a warm welcome, we started the day with a farm tour, giving our guests a glimpse into the full cycle of life on the farm. The first stop was our compost-making facility, where kitchen scraps, leaves, and plant trimmings are turned into the dark, nutrient-rich compost that sustains our crops. Here, volunteers learned how waste becomes wealth — how yesterday’s leftovers feed tomorrow’s harvest.
Next, we visited the greenhouse, where trays of seedlings reach for the light. This is where the journey of every plant begins — in the quiet warmth of nurturing hands and watchful care. From there, we walked through rows of vegetables and herbs, pausing to touch, smell, and taste the freshness growing all around us.
One of the highlights of the tour came unexpectedly: a bitter leaf tasting. Many of our volunteers had never tasted this traditional African green before. They were curious — and a little hesitant — but everyone gave it a try. The expressions said it all! There were surprised laughs, puckered faces, and genuine interest as we explained how bitter leaf, though sharp to the tongue, carries powerful medicinal and nutritional benefits. It was a fun and educational moment — a perfect reminder that not all good things are sweet, and sometimes the “bitter” teaches us to appreciate the balance of nature’s flavors.
Then, it was time to get down to the main task — the sweet potato harvest. Armed with gloves, hoes, and plenty of enthusiasm, our volunteers made their way to the fields. The soil was soft and welcoming, and before long, the first sweet potatoes began to peek out from beneath the surface. There’s a special kind of joy that comes from unearthing food with your own hands — the quiet satisfaction of connecting effort with reward.
As we worked together, laughter filled the field. Volunteers compared the shapes of their harvests — some long and elegant, others short and chubby — each one unique. The work was steady but lighthearted, filled with conversation about farming, food, and the power of community. By late morning, our baskets were full of bright orange roots — tangible proof of teamwork and the earth’s generosity.
At Asawana Farms, we believe every farm day is a chance to grow more than crops. It’s a chance to grow community, trust, and shared understanding. The sweet potato harvest — combined with the unexpected lesson from the bitter leaf — was a perfect symbol of that balance: the sweetness of teamwork and the honest flavor of learning.
To our four incredible volunteers — thank you. You brought energy, kindness, and curiosity that enriched our fields and our hearts. You are now part of the Asawana story, and we are grateful for the partnership you’ve helped us build.
We can’t wait to welcome more friends, families, and learners to the farm. Whether it’s composting, planting, harvesting, or simply tasting the diversity of our crops, there’s always something new to discover at Asawana Farms.
So, if you missed this volunteer day — don’t worry! More opportunities are coming. Come learn, grow, and taste with us. Together, we’re cultivating a future where community, sustainability, and gratitude thrive side by side.
