There’s something truly special about watching life come full circle — where hands that once tilled the soil in their youth return to the land, not for labor, but for connection, joy, and purpose.
That’s exactly what happened this past Saturday, November 7th, 2025, at Asawana Farms, when we welcomed a delightful senior citizens’ couple for a day filled with learning, laughter, and the simple beauty of farm life.
A Morning Full of Curiosity and Connection
The day began with a tour of the farm — a gentle walk through our compost making facility, the greenhouse where all seeds are nursed that tell the story of Asawana Farms and the Urban Farm Incubator. As we moved from one section to another, the couple asked questions about our organic methods, irrigation systems, and how we ensure the soil remains healthy and alive.
Their curiosity and enthusiasm were contagious — proof that the desire to learn never truly fades with age.
Getting Their Hands in the Soil
After the tour, it was time to roll up our sleeves! Together, we headed to the cherry tomato patch, where the air was filled with that sweet, earthy scent of ripening fruit. With gentle smiles and careful hands, our senior guests began harvesting bright red and green cherry tomatoes, each one glistening like a tiny jewel in the morning sun.
From there, they joined in planting onions, pressing the seedlings into the soil with care and patience. Every movement spoke of mindfulness — a rhythm that only comes when work is done not out of necessity, but from love.
At Asawana Farms, we believe farming should be accessible to everyone. That’s why each task is chosen based on a person’s comfort and ability. For our senior guests, this meant light but meaningful work — just enough to stretch the body, engage the mind, and nurture the spirit.
Learning, Exercising, and Giving Back
It’s easy to overlook how fulfilling these small tasks can be. For many seniors, daily routines often revolve around television or indoor activities. But here, under open skies, they got to move, laugh, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature in the most tangible way.
At the end of the day, they didn’t just leave with tired muscles — they left with valuable lessons about sustainable farming, a basket of fresh cherry tomatoes they helped harvest, and a renewed sense of purpose.
The Taste (and Power) of Bitter Leaf
Of course, no visit to Asawana Farms is complete without a taste of our famous bitter leaf! Our guests were intrigued to learn about its many health benefits — and yes, they bravely sampled it too!
Bitter leaf is one of nature’s most underrated superfoods. Its benefits include:
- Detoxification:Helps cleanse the liver and flush out toxins.
- Blood Sugar Regulation:Supports healthy glucose levels, making it great for diabetics.
- Digestive Support:Aids digestion and improves appetite.
- Immune Boost:Packed with antioxidants and vitamins that strengthen the body’s natural defenses.
As they nibbled on the fresh, slightly tangy leaves, the couple shared stories about their youth — a beautiful reminder that our roots and our food traditions are deeply intertwined.
Growing Together, No Matter the Age
By the time the couple had to leave, smiles and laughter had filled every corner of the farm. The couple left with their own tomatoes in hand and joy in their hearts, already promising to return.
At Asawana Farms, this is exactly why we exist — to create a welcoming space where anyone, regardless of age, can come to learn how to grow, experience the joy of farming, and feel connected to the land and community.
We believe that growth is not limited by age, and that spending time in nature offers something priceless: peace, purpose, and connection.
So here’s to more days like this — more soil-stained hands, shared laughter, and wisdom harvested alongside fresh vegetables.
Because at Asawana Farms, we don’t just grow crops — we grow community, joy, and lifelong memories.
