From Park Ranger to Bitter Leaf Believer: A Visit to Remember at Asawana Farms

11/9/2025 – On Saturday, November 9, 2025, we had the pleasure of welcoming Park Ranger Brian to Asawana Farms. It’s not every day that a park ranger swaps his hat for a farmer’s cap — but when passion meets purpose, amazing things can happen on the farm!

Brian’s visit was more than a casual drop-in; it was an exchange of ideas between two people who share a love for nature, cultivation, and community. As we walked through the fields, talking about sustainable practices, local foods, and soil health, his curiosity kept circling back to one plant — bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina).

A Taste of Tradition

When Brian first heard the name “bitter leaf,” he smiled and said, “How bitter can it really be?” We laughed, then handed him a freshly plucked leaf to try. The moment he bit into it, his expression went from curious to surprised — and then intrigued.

After the initial taste, we shared the backstory — how bitter leaf has been used for generations across Africa not only as a flavorful vegetable but also as a natural medicine known for cleansing the liver, improving digestion, regulating blood sugar, and strengthening the immune system.

The more he learned, the more he leaned in. “I had no idea a plant could do all that,” he said. “I need to grow this myself.”

Curiosity Turned Commitment

That moment right there — a single spark of curiosity turning into a commitment to grow — is what Asawana Farms is all about.
We don’t just grow food; we grow awareness.
We don’t just harvest crops; we harvest knowledge.

Seeing someone like Ranger Brian — already connected to the environment through his work in conservation — discover the healing potential of a plant like bitter leaf reminded us why our educational mission matters so much.

Every visitor who steps onto the farm walks away not only with a deeper appreciation for what’s growing in the soil, but also for how what we eat shapes our health and our communities.

Food as Education, Farming as Empowerment

At Asawana Farms, we believe that farming is one of the most powerful forms of education. Whether we’re teaching about composting, showing children how to plant their first seed, or introducing someone to a new crop like bitter leaf, each encounter plants more than food — it plants knowledge and hope.

In a time when many are looking for ways to take better care of their health, learning to grow nutrient-rich foods is one of the simplest yet most transformative steps. As we often say:

“Food is medicine — and medicine starts in the soil.”

We’re excited to see how Ranger Brian’s journey with bitter leaf unfolds. Who knows — the next time you visit one of Maryland’s parks, you might find him talking not just about trees and wildlife, but about the power of growing your own greens!
