3/29/2025 – On a bright and hopeful Saturday morning, community members gathered with gloves, tools, and hearts full of purpose at Asawana Farms for the Special Vertical Garden Volunteer Workshop—a day dedicated to planting seeds of change in both soil and society.
This vibrant initiative wasn’t just about building a garden—it was about building connections, growing knowledge, and cultivating a future rooted in sustainability, health, and community engagement.
A Garden with a Greater Mission
The vision behind Asawana Farms’ Vertical Garden Project is simple yet profound: to create a practical and sustainable garden that nurtures food security, encourages healthy lifestyles, and offers education through experience.
By reimagining the way we use space to grow food, the vertical garden becomes not only a source of fresh, organic produce—but also a symbol of possibility in the face of food deserts and nutritional inequities.
Empowering Through Education and Access
One of the most impactful goals of the project is to increase access to fresh food for seniors and underserved communities. These vertical gardens offer a new model for local food production, proving that even small spaces can make a big difference.
Throughout the day, volunteers of all ages worked side-by-side, learning to build the vertical gardens from two experienced volunteer builders, planting seedlings, and learning about sustainable farming practices. Students from Bowie State University as well as Eleanor Roosevelt High School found joy and purpose in hands-on activities, while adult community members discovered the magic of growing their own food—many for the first time.
A Living Learning Space
More than just a garden, the space is set to become a dynamic educational hub for schools, families, and organizations. From composting demonstrations to vertical planting techniques, it will provide ongoing opportunities for people to engage with agriculture in meaningful ways.
A Community Blooming Together
Asawana Farms March 29 workshop was a celebration of what can happen when a community comes together with a shared goal. With every shovel of soil turned and every plant rooted in place, participants helped shape a future where healthy food and agricultural awareness are accessible to all.
Looking Ahead
This workshop was just the beginning. The vertical garden will continue to grow, nourish, and inspire—thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the power of collective action.
To everyone who participated, supported, or simply cheered us on: thank you. Together, we’re growing more than just gardens—we’re growing hope.
